Have you ever made a Gin tasting ? Here we will explain the correct way to do it, so that you become a great host and propose a different plan to your friends at the next meeting.
The most interesting thing is that one person is in charge of serving all the gins, without the rest of the participants knowing which one they are tasting at any given moment. This way you will see how there will be big surprises.
PREPARATIONS FOR THE TASTING.
- The main thing is the Choice of gins Among which I would include a maximum of 5, among which the ideal would be to have a varied selection of botanicals in their manufacture, such as: one citrus, one floral, one low quality (to help discover the reason for the quality of alcohol) and a premium classic cut like our Bunker London Dry Gin .
- You must use a suitable cup, and ideally one would be tasting glass made of fine, good quality glass, which is similar to a small wine glass. Thanks to its shape captures the aromas inside, preventing them from evaporating, allowing them to be detected more easily on the edge of the glass, and allowing us to move the gin without heating it.
- Have the gin at a few 18 - 21 degrees approximately.
THE TASTING BEGINS.
- Service and order : serve 3cl. of gin in the glass, for which you can use a measuring cup. The order of tasting according to experts is to start with the most classic cuts, where juniper is more predominant.
- Visual phase : place the glass against the light or on a white background to appreciate its color. Most of them will be crystal clear and transparent, but where the botanicals have a greater impact, they will be slightly colored or have reflections.
- Mix : add 3 cl. of water (always still) and preferably with a weak mineral content, so as not to mask the aromas. With this we manage to reduce the alcohol level and release the aroma of the botanicals , which otherwise would be hidden by the alcohol. Spin the gin around the glass to oxygenate it slightly, and trap its aromas on the edge of the glass.
- Olfactory phase : inhale strongly, in order to carry the fragrances to the nerve endings at the top of the nose. We can perceive citrus, fruity, earthy, sweet, woody, spicy aromas... And if we notice a strong chemical or astringent smell, it is an indicator of a lower quality gin.
- Gustatory phase : bring the glass to your mouth and take a sip small, short and quick sip (without swallowing it), then letting the gin rest on the tongue for a few seconds. The first whiff should be pleasant, denoting the mixture of botanical aromas but with a predominant touch of juniper.
You need to take the time to appreciate all the hidden flavours, as there are a multitude of aromas thanks to the ingredients and botanicals used in each gin. And finally, a good gin has to have a clean and fresh finish.
I advise you to make a small note of each nuance of the gin, in order to be able to make a better final assessment.
And remember, gin was created to make our lives happier, so enjoy it with friends, that's what it's all about!!
Bunker for everyone!!
